What can I do in my turn?
On your turn in one round (which is meant to model about 6 seconds of real time) you can do any of the following
-Take one move action AND one standard action
-Take two move actions
-Take one full-round action
*Special note: on your turn you can always take one swift action and as many free actions as the DM sees fit (usually as many as you want)
*Second special note: any turn in which you do not move with one of your actions you may take a five-foot step
A) What can I do in a move action?
Think of a move action as something that takes some time, but not much effort. Moving a short way, pulling something out of a storage device or standing up off the ground; these are all move actions.
Think of a standard action as something that takes a little time and a bit of concentration. Making a single attack, drinking a potion and casting most spells are standard actions.
C) What can I do in a full-round action?
A full-round action is something that requires several seconds of intense concentration to achieve. Making a full attack, charging and using most skills are full-round actions.
D) What can I do in a free/swift action?
A free action is something that can be accomplished with little to time or effort, or can be combined with another action. Dropping a held item, speaking a short phrase and ceasing to concentrate on a spell are all free actions. The only difference between a free and a swift action is that you only get one swift action, such as casting a quickened spell, per turn.
In any turn in which you do not use any of your actions for movement you may take a 5-foot step. You may take the step at any time you like, such as between attacks in a full attack, or before or after casting a spell or drinking a potion.

the basics are good but how about some scenarios with thoughtful or inventive combat tactics? i'm still too excited about the 5-foot step to think about what i could do if i took some ranks in tumble!
Next time we get together we can go over some basics. Maybe Dan could put together a series of fake encounters that we could tactically dissect, without the pressure of "ohmygodit'syourturnforpete'ssakego!".
